This Sunday daylight savings time ends and we set our clocks back on November 6th at 2am. This means remembering to change all the clocks something that most of us often forget. The twice-yearly routine of changing the clocks was enacted by Congress in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. According to the U.S. Naval Observatory, the times have been altered through the years, but as of 2007 daylight time begins in most of the U.S. on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

Here are some other interesting facts on Daylight Saving time:

*Benjamin Franklin first suggested the idea of daylight-saving time in 1784, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. The idea got renewed attention in 1907, when Englishman William Willett proposed a similar system in a pamphlet called “The Waste of Daylight.”

*Standard time was not made the law of the land until the Act of March 19, 1918, also called the Standard Time Act. The Act also created daylight-saving time.

*Daylight-saving time proved to be a controversial issue and was repealed in 1919, but standard time stayed intact.

*Daylight-saving time was reinstated early in World War II, and was used year-round from Feb. 9, 1942, until Sept. 30, 1945. After the war ended its use varied among states and cities.

*In the Northern Hemisphere, our days will get progressively shorter until the winter solstice, which falls on Dec. 21 at 5:03 p.m. CDT.

* Daylight-saving time begins again on Sunday, March 12, 2017.
